CURRENT RESEARCH:

  1. Metal ion levels after hip resurfacing arthroplasty (Shimmin A, Young D)
This project is aimed at assessing the increase in the serum levels of cobalt on chromium after insertion of the Birmingham hip resurfacing. The wear products of metal articulations do have access to the circulation. Soluble metal ions occur due to either processes of corrosion or wear. This study uses the most modern technique for assessing serum cobalt and chromium levels to assess the increases the cobalt on chromium in recently resurfaced hips.
  2. Comparison of hip function in hip resurfacing versus total hip replacement
(Shimmin, Graves, Bennell) Melbourne University School of health Sciences
  3. Clinical and radiological follow-up of hip resurfacing arthroplasty
  4. Pelvic bone density studies following different types of hip arthroplasty
  5. Principal investigator "Allogenic stem cells and the treatment of articular cartilage pathology."
Randomized double blinded clinical trial to commence March 09
